Adolescence scoliosis or the idiopathic scoliosis common among adolescents ages 10 to 16 usually does not progress to adulthood. Curvatures on the spine are often due to growth but if the magnitude of the curves surpasses 40 degrees that would be the time to consult the doctor. Scoliosis is often diagnosed through orthopaedic exams. X-ray is done to assess the curve’s magnitude. Curve around 10 degrees under are normal. Curves above 10 up to 25 degrees are not qualified for bracing or surgery treatments but must be observed especially in growing up years. Above 25 degrees curve until 40 can be braced and beyond 40 degrees curves may require surgery to treat your scoliosis.
Causes and Types of Scoliosis
There are several types of scoliosis and each type being associated to their theoretical causes.The congenital scoliosis is present since birth. It is considered to be a deformity on the spine, scapula or thorax. This scoliosis condition is also due to intrauterine pressure or a paralysis in the intrauterine. The acquired scoliosis on the other hand can be caused to other condition or deformity such as torticollis or wry-neck, imbalance pelvic, unequal legs height, unequal vision or hearing and other asymmetries in the body aside the spine but directly affecting it.
Other causes of scoliosis can be an effect to other conditions such as Rickets, dislocation, Pott’s disease, tumors, Osteomalacia, tumors, bone disease or abnormalities and a lot more. Habits and type of occupation you have can also cause a scoliosis condition. The diopathic which accounts 80% of scoliosis conditions in adolescents, have no known causes.
Is Scoliosis curable?
Scoliosis is not a disease. This condition, however, might be a result to a disease or might be a cause of one. Nowadays, there are a lot of treatment and options to correct scoliosis. Treatment will be base on how severe the scoliosis condition is. The earlier you detect it the better chances of correcting it.
